Responsible Pet Ownership
No Pets Allowed
Please leave your pets at home when visiting Riverview Park and Zoo, including the disc golf course, lower level parking area and the Otonabee River walking trail. It is a requirement of our CAZA accreditation that there be no dogs anywhere on the grounds and also necessary given that we are located on a source water protection site.
Pets can cause stress that could endanger the animals that live here and we wish to protect your pets from contracting any zoonotic diseases as well. We encourage you to take advantage of the many dog parks found in the city instead.
Service Dogs
Fully trained service dogs are permitted on the grounds when working and providing support to a person with a disability. Service dogs must be wearing a service dog vest and the client must have documentation of certification for the dog. All service dogs must stay on the main path and not approach the animal exhibits for any reason.
Visitors planning to bring a service dog are asked to check in at either Guest Services or the Riverview Park and Zoo Office upon their arrival to alert the animal care staff.
New Pets
Check your source when seeking a pet. Be sure to research and ask the pet supplier where they acquired the animals and how. Make sure you have the time, resources, and knowledge to best care for the animal when making a decision to get a pet.
Adopt from your local humane society
There are many animals in need of a good home. Contact your local humane society to see the loveable animals that could join your family.
Exotic Pets
Each year thousands of animals are captured, often illegally, for the exotic pet trade. Many of these animals are injured or perish during transit and often are too challenging or dangerous for the average person to care for. Pets can also threaten ecosystems when they escape or are released by owners who can no longer care for them.
Many exotic animals like turtles and parrots are critically endangered due to the illegal pet trade as well as loss of their natural habitat. Exotic animals have complex needs that can only be met by people with specialized training at licensed accredited facilities such as CAZA accredited zoos.
We believe that responsible pet ownership is healthier for people, animals and the environment.
Report
It is everyone’s responsibility to keep animals safe. Report any concerns of irresponsible pet ownership to the local agencies that can help. Contact the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA).
