Source Water Protection Area

Riverview Park and Zoo is located on a Source Water Protection Area, next to the Otonabee River, which is the source of Peterborough's drinking water.

The Clean Water Act

The Clean Water Act, 2006 is part of the multi-barrier approach to ensure clean, safe and sustainable drinking water for Ontarians by protecting sources of municipal drinking water such as lakes, rivers and well water.

Drinking water source protection program

Under this legislation, the government of Ontario established the Drinking Water Source Protection Program. This resulted in the development of science-based assessment reports and local source protection plans by multi-stakeholder source protection committees, supported by Source Protection Authorities.

Source protection plans

Carrying out all 22 protection plans is well underway across Ontario by municipalities and Conservation Authorities. These plans recommend or require actions be taken to address activities deemed as threats to drinking water sources.

Drinking Water Protection Road Signs are appearing across Ontario to raise awareness of the sensitivity of our drinking water sources.
